In a unique way to pay tributes to Guru Nanak Dev on his 550th birth anniversary, Amarjit Singh Chawla and his wife Gursharan Kaur have decided to complete the audacious task of driving about 50,000 miles on the route, which the founder of Sikhism had undertaken over five centuries ago.

In the holy city today, Chawla said this epic long drive would be a pilgrimage for them as they would be following the route of four Udasis of Guru Sahib. The couple along with a five-member team commenced their journey from Delhi on July 3.

Chawla said Guru Sahib had visited 27 of the present 29 Indian states, besides travelling to countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal.

He hoped to complete the travel in 135 days. So far, they have travelled to Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Leh Ladakh, Kargil and Jammu. Their team comprises Col Dr DS Grewal, a travel expert, and camera team members Lukman Malik, Jasraj Singh, Harmit Singh and Santosh Kumar.

Chawla has earned the nickname “Turban Traveller” after travelling 36,800 km in 131 days on road from Delhi to London.

The 60-year-old Dehli-based garment exporter passed over the baton of family business to his son and daughter over three years ago. He is joined in his mission by his wife, a homemaker. Chawla wishes to travel next year to Pakistan and then to Arab countries, which Guru Nanak Dev had visited too.
