Inspector Bhupinder Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Sadar police station, Fazilka, and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Surinder Kumar have been placed under suspension for negligence in discharging their duties.

The officials have been suspended after inquiries conducted by Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Ranbir Singh into the case of former sarpanch Charanjit Singh escaping from the police lock-up on Friday. The SHO and ASI have been sent to Fazilka Police Lines.

Charanjit Singh, a former sarpanch of Dhani Khivapur village, was arrested by the police on Thursday for allegedly beating up some youths and forcing them to confess that they were members of child lifters’ gang. But Charanjit Singh, who was lodged in the Sadar police station lock-up, fled away after assaulting and injuring Punjab Home Guard (PHG) volunteer Kulwinder Raj, who was on duty in the police station at 5 am on Friday. Kulwinder Raj was admitted to the local Civil Hospital as he sustained severe eye and head injuries.
