Former sarpanch Charanjit Singh, who was arrested on Thursday for allegedly beating up some youths and forcing them to confess that they were members of child lifters’ gang, fled from the Sadar police station here by injuring on-duty Punjab Home Guard (PHG) volunteer today.

The former sarpanch of Dhani Khivapur village was arrested on Thursday afternoon. He was to be produced before the Judicial Magistrate today.

Official sources said PHG volunteer Rachhpal Singh, who was on duty from 3 am to 6 am, opened the door of the lock-up at 5 am to allow accused Charanjit Singh to answer the call of nature. Seeing an opportunity, Charanjit Singh tried to flee from the police station, but PHG volunteer Kulwinder Raj, who was on duty on the main gate, tried to catch him.

Charanjit Singh hit Raj on the head and eye and managed to escape.

Raj was admitted to the local civil hospital as he sustained severe eye injury and currently was not able to see from one eye.

Charanjit Singh has been booked under Sections 353, 186, 332, 223 and 224 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Punjab Home Guard volunteer Rachhpal Singh has also been booked for dereliction of duty.

Fazilka Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagdish Kumar said different teams had been dispatched to nab Charanjit Singh.
