Moga, August 3
An attempt by “land mafia” was made to take the possession of a prime piece of land measuring 2 kanals belonging to the Central Government situated on the national highway just opposite the District Magistrate’s residence in Moga city.
Gurwinder Johal, SDM, confirmed that he got information that a few persons had tried to take possession of a 2-kanal plot belonging to the Central Government (custodian property). “I went to the spot and found that the land was being filled with soil to raise its level, but there was nobody on the plot,” he said.
He said he called the local police and gave instructions to keep an eye there. “I have also asked the police to scan all CCTV cameras installed around the plot to find out who tried to raise the level of the plot by filling soil, but so far I have not received any report from the police department,” he said.
Area Councillor Gurpreet Singh Sachdeva alleged that the land mafia was active in the city under the patronage of local police and Congress leadership. “The government must hand over the investigations of land grabbing cases to the state vigilance bureau,” he demanded.
Meanwhile, in the land grabbing incident of the religious trust, the police had registered a criminal case against eight members of the “land mafia”, but no one has been arrested so far.
