Bathinda, July 26
Activists of the BKU Ekta Ugrahan today blocked the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway at Bhucho Khurd village to protest the police move to cancel the FIR against commission agents who were earlier booked in the suicide case of farmer Manjit Singh.
A large number of police personnel were deployed along with water cannon to suppress the protest. Even the police from nearby districts was called in.
The protest was lifted in the evening after a delegation of farmers held a meeting with the police officials. The IGP, Bathinda range, assured the farmers that the cancellation report would be withdrawn and reinvestigation would be done within one month in this case.
During the protest, farmer union leaders alleged that the police, under political pressure, was trying to give the agents a clean chit instead of arresting them. They also demanded that a case should be registered against the commission agents after conducting a probe. They also demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of Manjit Singh.
Manjeet Singh had sold off his land for Rs 45 lakh, of which he had kept Rs 20 lakh with these commission agents. However, when he approached them to get his money back, they reportedly declined to hand it over to him. Manjit consumed poison on January 26 and died on February 8.
BKU Ekta Urgahan district president Shingara Singh Mann said “The police have assured that they would withdraw the cancellation report filed by them in the court and within one month fresh probe will be conducted in the case.” Bathinda SSP Dr Nanak Singh said, “A delegation of farmers had come to meet the Bathinda IGP. We have assured them that if they have any grievance, it will be addressed.”
