Best Lawyers in Chandigarh Stuck in Iraq for months, 7 youths return home

It was a festive moment for family members of seven Punjabi youths as they arrived from Iraq at the Delhi airport today after hectic efforts by the Union Government. The seven youths, including five from Phillaur, one from Phagwara and another from Bholath, were duped by a woman agent Neelam Rani, who, along with her relative Ram Labhaya, had promised them jobs in Iraq.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Phillaur, Davinder Singh Attri and Phagwara DSP Manjit Singh said the youths landed at the Delhi airport around 5 am today. The police had registered several cases under Sections 420 and 406 against Neelam Rani and Ram Labhaya, both residents of Shotran village, on May 30 this year. The youths, identified as Randeep, Baljeet, Saurav, Sandeep, are residents of the same village. Amandeep is the resident of Attan village near Goraya while Komaljit is a resident of Phagwara and Pravjot Singh belongs to Bholath. The youths lived in Iraq for around eight months.

Mohan Lal, father of Komaljit , said the accused sent his son to Iraq via Muscat and Dubai, but did not provide him documents upon reaching there, rendering him jobless for six months. Phillaur DSP Davinder Singh Attri said the accused charged more than Rs 2.25 lakh from each youth in December last year.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Delhi, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal thanked the External Affairs Ministry for directing the Consul General in Erbil to intervene and take steps for the repatriation of the youth.

23-yr-old dies in US  

Kapurthala: A 23-year-old youth and a native of Georgepur village in Sultanpur Lodhi here died in a road accident at California (US). The victim, Sandeep Singh, had moved to the US about four years ago. Family sources said the parents of the youth would be leaving for the US to bring back his body. TNS
