A protest led by Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Union over the death of a shopkeeper here continued for the third consecutive day today.
Meanwhile, commuters had a harrowing time on the busy Bathinda-Amritsar national highway.
The union leaders have been sitting on protest following the death of shopkeeper Kewaljit Singh (42), a resident of Mansoor Dewa village, in the Zira sub-divison on July 25 when a bus belonging to a private company rammed into his shop.
Union leaders said Kewaljit was the only bread earner in his family. “His wife is a cancer patient and there is no one else who can feed the family as his children are still studying. We want Rs 20 lakh compensation for his family, besides government job for one of the family members and registration of case under Section 304 of the IPC against the erring driver,” said Sukhwant Singh, PRO of the union.
The protestors were also demanding compensation for the repair of vehicles damaged by the bus which were parked outside his shop.
“Kewaljit’s body is presently at Government Medical College, Faridkot, and we will not let the cremation take place till our demands are met,” said a union leader.
“We also urge the state government to implement traffic rules strictly so that more precious lives can be saved,” they added.
The dharna was finally lifted in the evening after senior police and civil officials pacified the protestors. Sandeep Sharma, SP (H), said a compensation of Rs 2 lakh was announced from the Red Cross besides a case under Section 304 of the IPC had been registered against the driver. He said the private transport company would provide job to the son of the deceased.
