Patiala, July 27
Mystery has deepened over the disappearance of two siblings from Kheri Gandian village of Ghanaur block in the district with the Patiala police still groping in the dark even as six days have passed.
The brothers, Hasandeep and Jashandeep, aged 6 and 10, respectively, went missing on Monday. Though the police on Saturday morning recovered the body of a child from Sarala head of Bhakra canal, the family has not identified the body.
The body was recovered from the canal just a few kilometers away from the village. Police said some family members and villagers had first identified it, but the family later failed to recognise him before it was shifted to Government Rajindra Hospital.
Search in Bhakra canal
The police have been searching for the missing brothers in the Bhakra canal, which is just 200 m from the village. They suspect that the brothers might have been kidnapped and ended up in the canal.
CIA staff incharge Shaminder Singh said they were trying to trace the boys. “We have strengthened our vigilance around the Bhakra canal after the recovery of a body from Sarala head.”
Police face hurdles
Sources said the probe has failed to make headway over the alleged lack of cooperation from villagers and family members. The police are finding it difficult to question and grill villagers as sentiments among them run high in the current scenario. Police officials claimed that the first two days of the investigation, crucial in the case, were lost in managing the dharna staged by the villagers. Moreover, the theory of the children having gone to buy cold drinks from a nearby shop has also not been proven yet.
Meanwhile, Patiala MP Preneet Kaur today met the family members.
Body not identified
Some villagers, a barber and divers have identified the body of one of the boys, but the family is denying it. We will keep the body for next 72 hours and send it for a DNA test, if required.
