A local Congress leader has been arrested today for allegedly raping a minor girl here. The accused, identified as Harjit Singh (29), a resident of Mirpur village near Nurpur Bedi, came in contact with the victim’s family a few months ago while canvassing for the party during the Lok Sabha elections.

He had been posting pictures of his party meetings along with senior Congress leaders of the district for the last two years claiming that he was general secretary of the District Congress. After his arrest in the rape case, Ropar district Congress president Brinder Singh Dhillon, however, claimed that the party never appointed him on any post. He, however, did not reply to the query that why the party didn’t raise objection to such claims of the accused during the last two years. Davinder Singh, DSP, said the victim in her complaint had alleged that Harjit visited their house along with one of their relatives during the elections to seek votes for his party candidate. He told her father that he was in touch with senior party leaders.

The victim said she had to reappear in English and Math of Class X and Harjit assured of help. On July 1, the accused took her to the office of the PSEB in Mohali on the pretext of getting her passed in both subjects. The victim alleged that he took her in a hotel where he raped her at gunpoint and even took her obscene pictures. The accused has been arrested and booked under various Sections of the IPC, Arms Act and POCSO Act. — TNS
