Youths leave bag with grenades, flee

Amritsar, June 2

The Amritsar police have confiscated two hand grenades from two youths in the Rajasansi area near Amritsar on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred in wee hours of Sunday when the police at a checkpoint at Kukkranwala village signalled two bike-borne youths to stop. They managed to give the police a slip, but dropped the bag containing the grenades while fleeing.

Vikram Jeet Duggal, SSP, Amritsar (Rural), said an intensive search operation had been launched to nab them. He said at 4.50 am, cops at a checkpoint at Kukkranwala village signalled two bike-borne youths to stop as there was no number plate on the bike. The turbaned youths with covered faces initially slowed down their bike and later tried to speed away.

However, constables Tejpal Singh and Harpartap Singh caught hold of the pillion rider. However, he managed to give the police a slip, but dropped the bag while fleeing. During search, the police found two hand grenades and a mobile phone from the bag. A case has been registered under the Explosives Act.

“The recovery has not only averted a possible law and order problem but also sounded an alert among the police,” said Duggal. He said the hand grenades would be sent for forensic examination which could help in ascertaining the source of these bombs.

The police are already on a high alert in view of the Operation Bluestar anniversary on June 6. — TNS
