Sangrur, June 2

Two sisters who climbed atop a water tank at Ramnagar Chhanna village on Friday evening have refused to come down till a case is registered against their relatives, who allegedly tried taking possession of their land forcibly.

“On Friday, three of my paternal aunts tried to take possession of our agricultural land. However, instead of taking them into custody, the Sherpur police took me, my father and our relatives to the police station and registered a case against us. My sisters Sukhmandeep Kaur and Mantripat Kaur have been sitting atop a water tank since Friday evening and they won’t come down till a case is registered against our relatives,” said Jagjot Singh, son of Shivdyal Singh.

Terming the demand of the girls irrational, the police said the land belongs to Jagjot’s aunts and the owners could enter in their land anytime.

However, the villagers are supporting the girls and protesting near the water tank.

“If the aunts had the legal right, they should have come along with cops and not goons to take forcible possession of the land. Our village is backing the girls,” said Balwant Singh, Sherpur block president of the BKU Dakaunda.

Meanwhile, Dhuri DSP Mohit Aggarwal said: “We are trying to convince the girls to come down from the tank.”
