Hearing on ex-SSP’s bail petition today

Chandigarh, May 28

The Punjab and Haryana High Court will on Wednesday hear interim bail plea filed on health grounds by former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma. The petition, which came up for hearing this morning, was adjourned for tomorrow and will be contested by Advocate-General Atul Nanda.

As the case came up for hearing, the Bench was told that Charanjit Sharma was suffering from heart ailment and was required to undergo process for implanting stent. As such, he was required to be released on interim bail. In an attempt to substantiate his contentions, a report by the PGIMER was also placed before the Bench.

The petition was opposed by the counsel appearing for the state government, who among other things said two persons had died and Sharma was not entitled to any relief from the court.

Just about three years after the police fired at Sikhs protesting peacefully at Kotkapura against the incidents of sacrilege, the Justice Ranjit Singh commission of inquiry had indicted several police officers. It ruled that use of force at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan was unwarranted, uncalled for and not needed at all. The firing at Kotkapura took place between 6 am and 7 am on October 14, 2015. In its report to be tabled before the Vidhan Sabha, Justice Ranjit Singh had asserted the responsibility of action at Kotkapura to forcefully evict the protesters sitting on a peaceful dharna squarely lied with the police. — TNS
