Hemant Mandal (18), a Nepalese first-year student (civil diploma) of the RIMT University in Mandi Gobindgarh, died on Wednesday night after he experienced sudden pain and uneasiness. Students alleged that he lost his life as there was no medical aid on the campus and there was delay in the provision of transport to hospital.

Agitated students vandalised parked vehicles, windowpanes and computers.

A heavy contingent of police personnel led by SP (Investigation) Harpal Singh was deputed. They pacified the students by registering an FIR on their statement. They booked hostel warden Mohan Singh under Section 304 of the IPC. The students alleged that the college management charged high fees and medical funds, but Hemant was not provided immediate medical aid and transportation.

They said when Hemant told them that he was experiencing uneasiness and pain in stomach, they rushed to the warden and urged him to arrange a vehicle to take him to a hospital. They alleged that he wasted time by asking questions like who would bear the medical expenses. They alleged after much protest, he arranged the vehicle but did not accompany them to the hospital. They said doctors at the Civil Hospital declared him brought dead.

Vice Chancellor Amarjit Singh Chawla refuted the allegations. He said a private car was provided immediately but he collapsed within no time due to cardiac arrest.
