Fazilka, November 28
The election to the posts of chairman and vice-chairman of the Fazilka Block Samiti has again been put off due to lack of quorum.
Fazilka SDM-cum-Returning Officer Subhash Khattak said of the total 18 members, only nine were present in the meeting. At least, 12 members are mandatory to conduct the meeting.
The meeting will now be held on Friday. On September 5 also, the elections were postponed due to the non-availability of the Returning Officer who had reportedly been taken ill.
The tussle between the ruling Congress and opposition BJP is stated to be cause behind the messy affair. Sources said of the 18 members, 12 belong to the Congress, five to the BJP and one to the CPI.
The sources said three dissident Congress members and the lone CPI member had decided to support the BJP candidate. As a result both Congress and BJP have support of nine members each.
A Congress member said nine party members, owing allegiance to Congress MLA Davinder Singh Ghubaya, were present in the meeting today. The Returning Officer has again issued letters to the members to attend the meeting on November 29 at 2 pm.
