Twentysix youths of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala are stuck in Russia after they were cheated by a travel agent, identified as Daljit Singh, a resident of Khurampur village near Phagwara.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Kapurthala, Satinder Singh said the police had arrested the accused under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC and Section 13 of the Punjab Professionals Act, 2014, on charges of duping 26 youths of Rs 32 lakh on the pretext of sending them to Russia. The SSP said the case was registered after a complaint was filed by Jarnail Singh, a resident of Mallo Majra village in Nawanshahr.

The complainant told the police that the accused made a deal of Rs 1.20 lakh with each youth to send and settle them in Russia. He said the youths were facing trouble as no jobs had been provided to them as per the agreement. Phagwara DSP Surinder Singh Chand said the accused was produced before the local judicial magistrate today who sent him in police remand for three days. —OC
