In a keenly fought contest, Congress candidate Bago Bai won the election to the post of chairperson of the block samiti, Fazilka, by a margin of two votes against her rival BJP candidate Waziro Bai here today. Fazilka SDM-cum-Returning officer Subhash Khattak said all the 18 members were present in the meeting today and elections were held peacefully.

Notably, the post of the chairperson has been reserved for women. Similarly, the Congress was also declared victorious for the post of vice-chairman as its candidate Baldev Singh defeated CPI’s Subeg Singh by three votes.

The election for the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson could not be held after a gap of more than a year of election due to reported factionalism within the Congress. The elections were deferred twice for one reason or the other. Of the total 18 members, 12 belong to the Congress, five to BJP and one to CPI.
