Patiala, November 29
Ten days after four Congress MLAs raised the issue of phone recording by an SHO, the police officer concerned was booked on Thursday night on charges of kidnapping and extortion of Rs 30 lakh from a Bathinda resident and others.
The PA to a Congress MLA has also been booked under conspiracy charges in the case.
Then Samana CIA in-charge Vijay Kumar and Johnny Mittal, PA to a Congress MLA, have been booked. However, they are reportedly evading arrest.
According to the FIR, Vijay had conducted a raid at Samana, rounded up some people and threatened to book them under the NDPS Act. However, after an initial demand for Rs 50 lakh those rounded up were allegedly let off after paying Rs 30 lakh.
Sources said Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar had brought the corruption issue to the fore, following which the FIR was registered.
Sources alleged that while Rs 11 lakh was taken by Vijay, Mittal pocketed Rs 19 lakh.
The Congress MLAs from Patiala district had recently levelled charges of corruption against some police officers, after which the district police last week initiated an inquiry into the functioning of the Samana CIA unit.
Congress MLAs Hardial Singh Kamboj, Madan Lal Jalalpur, Rajinder Singh and Nirmal Singh had questioned the working of police at a meeting of the District Grievances Committee chaired by minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot.
Confirming the development, SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the FIR had been registered following corruption and kidnapping charges. “We are probing the matter and will investigate the role of those let off after paying the money,” he said.
