A 44-year-old resident of Nuhon Colony near Ghanauli village died after his car fell into the Bhakra canal on Monday evening. The deceased, identified as Lakhwinder Singh, was going to a hospital when the incident occurred.
According to the police, Lakhwinder had left home in a car for a hospital after he felt pain in his leg at night. When he did not return home till late night, his relatives started searching for him. Later, someone informed them that a car had fallen into the Bhakra canal.
On Monday night, the police started a search for the car in the canal with the help of divers but nothing could be found.
On Tuesday morning, the divers restarted the search and found the victim and the car. The car was retrieved from the canal by noon.
The police said that inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of the Criminal Procedure (CrPC) had been started in the case.
