A day after hearing on a complaint filed by Justice Ranjit Singh against former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and MLA Bikram Singh Majithia, the former judge today approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court with a plea against the pronouncement of judgment in the matter.
In his two-page handwritten application, Justice Ranjit Singh asserted that the court allowed his counsel to make submission for 10 minutes at 4.25 pm. The staff of the judge then informed him about his transfer order. The judge abruptly left the court without passing any order.
“No order was shown on the internet. The counsel made an enquiry from the reader and was apprised that no order was passed,” Justice Ranjit Singh stated, adding that the case status was shown as “reserve” at 11 am today.
Justice Ranjit Singh added that it would be highly inappropriate for a judge to pass order in a case, which remained incomplete and in which arguments were yet to conclude. Even otherwise, it was not appropriate for a judge under transfer to deal with the case and pronounce the order.
The judge was hearing arguments on the complaint on Wednesday, when he got up during the proceeding apparently after receiving his transfer order. Senior advocate APS Deol was addressing the Bench on Justice Ranjit Singh’s behalf on the issue of maintainability and other aspects of the complaint when a court official said something to the judge. He, in turn, got up and left for his chamber even before Deol could conclude his arguments.
