As the 18 breaches reported in Jalandhar ravaged fields of over 20 villages in the district, damaging over 70,000 acres of paddy, farmers now fear more losses as silt deposited on their land could affect the soil fertility and hit wheat production.

Farmers say many had taken land on lease at Rs 50,000 per acre. Their paddy crop had gotten submerged and the fields were now covered with silt, worrying them for the upcoming rabi season.

Gurdeep Singh of Janian Chahal village, said he had taken land on lease for Rs 4 lakh. “My crop is destroyed and the fields are covered with silt and muck. Without de-silting, I cannot think of sowing wheat.”

Farmer Ravinder Singh said although the CMhad ordered supply of free wheat seed to farmers, it wouldn’t be of any help as silt and pollutants had degraded the soil.

As per Surjit Singh, Agriculture Development Officer, the standing crop was flattened due to silt and there were chances the mud deposited would hamper the soil fertility to much extent. Chief Agriculture Officer Nazar Singh said although there wouldn’t be much impact of floodwater on wheat, but de-silting of fields was required.
