A number of trees have been axed near Bhundar Bhaini village, leading to a controversy. Sangrur Deputy Commissioner has ordered an inquiry and promised to take action if anyone is found guilty.

Harpal Singh of Bhunder Bhaini alleged, “Many full grown trees were axed with the help of JCB machines from the outskirts of the village by some residents with the help of panchayat department officers. When we opposed the action, they threatened us with dire consequences as they have the support of ruling party leaders.”

Attempts to contact Moonak Block Development and Panchayat officer Parmjit Kaur proved futile.

In their complaint sent to senior authorities, area residents alleged that some days back, a group of villagers started a cleanliness drive. But three days ago, they started axing trees and continued felling for three days despite opposition and complaints to village secretary and other authorities.

“We have sent letters to all senior authorities, but still there is no action and we are receiving threats from the accused. We demand a high-level inquiry and registration of a case against all those involved,” said Kewal Singh, another resident.

AAP leader Jasvir Singh Kudni said he along with area residents would take up the issue with senior authorities.

Ghanshyam Thori, Deputy Commissioner, said: “I will get conducted a detailed inquiry and recommend appropriate action on the basis of its report.”
