Chandigarh: Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) on Friday urged the Centre to release pending Rs 1,400 crore of post-matric scholarship (PMS) scheme. Dr Anshu Kataria, president, PUCA, said Rs 415.60 crore was due for 2016-17, Rs 538 cr 2017-18 and Rs 437.19 crore 2018-19. He said the delay in release of scholarship funds had created financial crunch in state colleges. TNS

Jawan climbs tower over police ‘inaction’

Sangrur: Carrying a bottle of petrol and a matchbox, an Army man climbed a mobile tower to protest police “inaction” in connection with an assault case. The jawan, identified as Gurpreet Singh, alleged that the Sehna police took no action against those who “attacked” his family on September 21. After getting an assurance that his complaint would be looked into, he finally came down. TNS

Two booked for duping people of Rs 45 lakh

Ropar: The police have booked two residents of Himachal Pradesh for duping several persons of crores on the pretext of managing government jobs for them. The accused have been identified as Chander Shekhar of Nalagarh and Rohit Kashta of Mashobra, near Shimla. Ram Avtar of Nalagarh had lodged a complaint with the Anandpur Sahib police that the accused had duped his son and other relatives of Rs 45 lakh by handing them fake appointment letters for government jobs. State signs green memorandum with NEERI

Chandigarh: The state government on Friday signed a memorandum with CSIR-National Environment Engineering and Research Institution (NEERI) with a view to address various environmental issues. The MoU was exchanged by Principal Secretary Science, Technology and Environment Rakesh Verma and Scientist of CSIR-NEERI, Nagpur, Dr Hamant Purohit at CSIR Science Centre, Vigyan Kendra, New Delhi to carry forward collaborative activities for a period of five years. Verma said NEERI would extend requisite technical support for effective monitoring of environmental protection action plans prepared for clean rivers, air and waste management. TNS

Four arrested with 35-kg poppy husk

Abohar: Four residents of Malout in Muktsar district were on Friday nabbed for attempt to smuggle poppy husk from Rajasthan. Police claimed to have seized 35-kg poppy husk, packed in two plastic bags, by intercepting a car having Delhi registration on the Hanumangarh mega highway. Sources said Shingara Singh Rattakhera (35), Harmandeep Singh Qabarwala (19), Sonu Meghwal (25) and Kulwinder Singh (24) were held under the NDPS Act and their car had been impounded. OC

1-kg opium seized from truck, two arrested

Abohar: The police here seized one kg of opium from the driver's cabin of a truck that entered Punjab from Sriganganagar. Driver Sukhdev Singh of Kamala Middu and cleaner Jaspal Singh of Rukane Wala village in Ferozepur have been held under the NDPS Act. OC

Coop society secy booked for embezzlement

Muktsar: The Gidderbaha police have booked a former secretary of Chhateana Multipurpose Cooperative Society for allegedly embezzling Rs 29.87 lakh during his tenure. Assistant Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Gidderbaha, lodged a complaint stating that  accused Rajinder Singh was transferred on August 31 last year, but he did not hand over records to his successor. “During the investigation, embezzlement of Rs 29.87 lakh was detected. Rajinder deposited Rs 14.22 lakh, but the remaining amount is yet to be recovered from him,” alleged the complainant. TNS

Robbers loot ornaments, cash; flee in family’s car

Muktsar: Four armed youngsters, with their faces covered, entered a house on Peori road in Gidderbaha town last night, took house occupants hostage and decamped with gold/silver ornaments, Rs 50,000 and a car. Victim Sandeep said the robbers entered his house around 9.30 pm and  decamped with 100-gm gold and 50-gm silver ornaments, besides Rs 50,000 in cash. They locked them up in a room, took their cell phones and fled in the famile’s Alto car. A case has been registered. TNS
