Bathinda, September 27

The search operation by the NDRF team to find bodies of two newborn girls who were thrown into the Sirhind canal by their maternal grandmother and maternal uncle, continues even as 40 hours have already gone by.

The search has been going on since Wednesday night.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Inspector Rajinder Kumar said, “We have been using inflatable boats to search for the bodies of newborns. But there has not been any trace so far. The water current is intense, so nothing can be said as of now. The search will continue.”

The police have booked the maternal grandmother and the maternal uncle of the newborns. Their mother belongs to Chak Attar Singhwala village and had two daughters already. The accused have confessed to the crime.

Ravinder Kumar, Inspector, Civil Lines police station, said, “We have got two-day remand of both accused and the interrogation is on. NDRF help has been sought to find bodies of the newborns.”

Meanwhile, a member of a city-based NGO alleged that assistance of the NDRF team was sought late. He said, “First 24 hours were already lost.”

Sadhu Ram Kushla, former project officer of the PNDT cell and executive member of district child welfare committee, said, “Nothing could be more heinous than killing newborns when they have not even opened their eyes. We would take all steps to ensure that culprits get the strictest possible punishment.” — TNS
