Amritsar: Drug peddlers are finding new ways to dodge the police with the latter intensifying their drive by keeping a strict vigil at localities infamous for drug trade. During a drive towards Chabal on Sunday, two bikes running parallel to each other caught eyes of this reporter. The pillion rider on one of these bikes received some currency notes from the second biker. After stuffing the money in his pocket, he opened a plastic bag and took out a sachet of drug. The second biker fled in the opposite direction after getting his dose. The local police earlier this week had also arrested a person for selling drugs while on the move. Well, it seems the cops too keep track of peddlers' novel ways to evade action.

It’s asset not nuisance

Fatehgarh Sahib: Palwinder Singh, a progressive farmer from Bronga Zer village, has set an example in doing his bit for environment. He has been ploughing stubble back into the fields with the help of happy seeder instead of burning it. This has increased the fertility of the soil and the crop yield. Palwinder sows wheat by taking land on lease. He has been regularly attending the farm fairs at Punjab Agricultural University and adopts the advanced agricultural practices in consultation with the agriculture and farmer welfare department and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). He says the government is providing advanced machinery on subsidy for stubble management and he himself got another happy seeder under this scheme and since 2011, he never burnt stubble.

A ‘first’ in many aspects

Hoshiarpur: Industries Minister and local MLA Sunder Sham Arora seems to be in the race to make his constituency “a first” in many aspects. After providing specially built water tankers in all 60 villages, he came up with a plan to make Hoshiarpur the first city to have open gymnasiums in all public parks and other public places. “Setting up 100 such gyms is my target. More than 20 have been set up,” says Arora. In another “first”, all 69 primary schools have been converted into smart schools. Hoshiarpur is the first constituency to have achieved this feat. All schools in the district also have RO drinking water facility. Rainwater harvesting system in schools is also in the pipeline. The recent in the row of “firsts” is stadiums for villages. “We have rolled out the project and funds have been provided to build one stadium for every five villages. Hoshiarpur is already number one in literacy rate,” Arora says.

In political tangles

Chandigarh: Amid war of the words is going on between the Congress and the Opposition over the investigations into the sacrilege cases, Congress MLAs are wary of the final outcome of the issue. A party leader laments it appears that ground is being prepared to bury the sacrilege cases by creating so much confusion that people finally get fed up and give up hope. “Subtle efforts are on to strategically fizzle out the probe, with clear directions and connivance of the political dispensation,” fears another leader. 

Down but not out

Fatehgarh Sahib: There is an attempt to negate the efforts of youth belonging to an NGO, Rise to Help Welfare Society, Sirhind, in increasing the green cover of the district. Some miscreants recently uprooted nearly 200 saplings planted by the NGO a month ago. Sahil Kapila of Sirhind, who heads the NGO comprising students and staff of many colleges, says they initiated the plantation drive under Green Fatehgarh Sahib Mission in view of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev and planted more than 200 saplings across the road leading from Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup Sahib to Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib. He says they have lodged a complaint with the police to find out the culprits. “We will not abandon our mission come what may,” he adds.
