Sangrur: Seeking full debt waiver, farmers under the banner of the Kirti Kisan Union have been protesting in front of the DC office since Wednesday. “The Punjab Government’s failure to waive the debt fully has compelled the farmers to commit suicides. We will intensify our agitation in coming days if the government fails to keep its promise,” said Bhupinder Longowal, convener of the union. TNS
Teenager dies as car falls into canal
Abohar: A teenager drowned as the car he was travelling in reportedly skidded into a canal in Sriganganagar on Thursday, two other occupants were rescued. Salman Khan (41) of Khunja village, along with his sister's son Sahil (16) and 1-year-old niece Rehana, was going to Udaipur Godran village after attending a wedding function in Chak RD-10 in Sriganganagar. Salman reportedly lost control on the car while passing through the lane close to Kanwersein Lift Canal and the vehicle skidded into the 12-ft deep canal. He was able to come out with Rehana and shouted for help. Some farm workers working nearby helped bring out Sahil, who was shifted to the nearest Civil Hospital but doctors declared him dead. OC
224-km cycle expedition by IAF men flagged off
Chandigarh: A three-day cycle expedition to the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Hussainiwala was flagged off on Thursday at the Bhisiana Air Force Station in Bathinda. The event is part of the 87th Air Force Day celebrations with ‘Swachh Bharat’ as the underlying theme. The expedition is headed by Wing Commander S K Behera and comprise of 19 Air Force men. The expedition, after covering a distance of 224 km, is expected to reach the border in Ferozepur district on Saturday evening. “The team will also publicise the importance of a ‘go green’ initiative by distributing pamphlets on the necessity of keeping our natural habitat safe for the future generations,” a statement said.
