The Punjab’s young national award winner sarpanch has become the subject of a documentary made by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

Sarpanch Panthdeep Singh Chhina of Chhina village in Gurdaspur district is known for transforming his village into a modern town.

His work came to light three years ago when his village panchayat was honoured at a state-level function by the state’s Rural Development Department.

Chhina, who did Masters in Business Economics from Guru Nanak Dev University, rejected a job in a multinational company, and preferred to help change lives in his village. He was instrumental in connecting each house of the village with a sewer system that too at a low cost. When every contractor was quoting Rs 35 to 40 lakh for the work, he along with other youths of the village got it done in Rs 8.5 lakh.

Now, his work will be promoted nationwide as the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, run by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj has started making documentaries on sarpaches who have done extraordinary work. The ministry chose developmental works such as sewerage, solar lighting, beautification of parks and health facilities in the village developed under Chhina’s leadership as subject of their first documentary “Champion of Change”.

“I don’t belong to any political party, so we always faced shortage of funds. However, we have established that MGNREGA can be used enterprisingly,” Chhina said.
