Mohali, September 25

The CBI today made it clear that it was continuing with its probe into the Bargari sacrilege cases.

As the case came up for resumed hearing before the CBI court at Mohali, the premier investigating agency submitted that it had constituted a fresh Special Investigating Team (SIT) and needed one month’s time to study the case. The submission comes at a time when the Punjab Government has questioned the right/jurisdiction of the CBI to further probe the matter, particularly after withdrawal of consent by the state.

Today, the CBI pleaded before the court that following a communiqué from the Director of Bureau of Investigation, Punjab, in connection with further investigation into certain issues, the fresh SIT has been constituted and a new investigating officer appointed.

“Now the SIT needs at least one month’s time for a thorough study of the case and to file the reply accordingly in the court,” said the CBI counsel in the court today.

The court has fixed October 30 as date for next hearing in the case.

Meanwhile, former MLA from Rampura Phul in Bathinda HS Jalal, who had moved an application at the previous court hearing to become a party in the case, today alleged before the court that both CBI and the state government were trying to hush up the case, following which the court held that he would be given time to speak during next hearings.

The Punjab Government had already filed its reply-cum-objection petition, raising questions over the investigating agency’s right or jurisdiction of further investigation into the case, particularly after withdrawal of consent by them (state).

Meanwhile, GPS Bal, counsel of two complainants Ranjit and Gora, has also filed its reply following directions of the court in which several illegalities in the investigation by the CBI, on the basis of which it had prepared the closure report in the case, have been pointed out.  Bal, while pointing out that the CBI had matched handwriting of the accused with their fingerprints, termed it as a major blunder. He added that in his reply, the chronological order of the sequence of incidents had also been given. “Besides, the lie-detection test of only three of a total to 49 suspects had been conducted,” alleged Bal.

The CBI had submitted its closure report to the court on July 4. On August 26, the agency again moved an application in the court and sought permission of further investigation into certain issues in the case. The sources added that in their fresh application, the CBI had also requested the court to keep the closure report in abeyance.

Gurdwara condones kids' 'profane' act

Abohar: The issue of sacrilege at the gurdwara in Sadhuwali village on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road has been resolved amicably. A police team spotted an empty pack of snacks, a toy and a prasad box at the gurdwara. Neighbours said four children, aged 6 or 7 years, were seen moving towards the gurdwara. When the police quizzed them, it was revealed that they had entered the holy place as it was neither locked nor anyone was present inside. While searching for prasad, they inadvertently touched the holy book which then slipped onto the floor. Parents expressed regret for their children's act and the management reportedly agreed to drop the case.
