Fatehgarh Sahib, September 27

A team of administration, police and health officials conducted a raid at an “illegal” drug de-addiction centre in Fatehgarh Neowan village and rescued 34 inmates today. One of the owners, Paramjit Singh, a resident of Manimajra in Chandigarh, has been arrested. The inmates were taken to the state-run rehabilitation centre in Sirhind.

The police said the kingpin, Jagrup Singh of Ismailpur, with his men, escaped.

Addressing mediapersons, SSP Amneet Kondal said the Khamano police received a tip-off regarding Baba Jujhar Singh Anti-drug Society. A police team, comprising Khamano DSP Dharmpal, Kheri Naudh Singh SHO Gagandeep Singh, civil and health officials, conducted the raid at a house in Fatehgarh Neowan village. The inmates were kept in an unhygienic environment, she said. The centre has been sealed and a case under Sections 420, 417, 342, 344, 323 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered. Raids are on to nab Jagrup Singh.

At the government rehabilitation centre in Sirhind, Deputy Commissioner Parshant Goyal and Civil Surgeon Dr NK Aggarwal Civil Surgeon said it was second such check within 20 days and similar action would continue.

Inmates said they were tortured by bouncers and no proper food was given. Besides, they were not allowed to meet their family. The illegal centre charged between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 from the inmates’ families.

18 rescued in Phagwara 

Phagwara: Health officials have  sealed an illegal drug de-addiction centre being run by Ludhiana resident Manavdeep Singh at Jajian Kalan village. Eighteen 18 inmates have been rescued. Goraya SHO Kewal Singh said six persons, including owner, were arrested. A firearm has been seized. OC
