A clone website of Punjabi University has surfaced, creating a flutter in official circles. Those running it have even uploaded fake detailed mark sheets (DMCs) using the official format for students who are not part of the university. The university has decided to report the matter to the crime branch.

The matter came to the fore a week ago. The parallel website’s domain name punjabiuniversity.org.in is similar to that of the original website of the university, punjabiuniveristy.ac.in.

An official said, “The fraudsters have used the official format of DMCs in the forged certificates. The registration numbers on the documents are different. The students named in them are also not on rolls of the university. The university will take up the matter legally.”

As per information, the clone website’s domain name was created in November last year and launched in March this year. Its admin areas include Haibowal Kalan, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana. The website is a copy of the university’s registered website carrying photographs, logos and font format of the original website.

The official said, “The website could be used to mislead our students and provide fake certificates to outsiders. It is a serious matter of security and forgery of documents.”

Dr GS Batra, Dean, Academics, confirmed that the university was in possession of fake documents. “We have procured the documents, including DMCs, and will report the matter to the cyber crime branch. We have already reported it to Google and the web-hosting organisation where the domain name was registered,” he said.

Dr BS Ghuman, Vice Chancellor, said, “The matter is serious. We will ensure that those involved are taken to task.”
