With the arrest of 26 persons, including two women, in different drug-related cases in the last two months, the anti-drug committees of three villages — Kotli Ablu, Gurusar, Ghagga — in Gidderbaha subdivision have claimed that their areas were now nearly 80 per cent free from drugs.
Notably, a large number of people, especially youths, are keeping a vigil in the villages and frisk the suspected persons and hand them over to the police, in case any contraband is found.
Parveen Bansal, a social activist working as a coordinator of these committees, said, “I have met the senior officials of the district administration, Health Department and the police and asked them to conduct a survey in Ghagga, Gurusar and Kotli Ablu villages as the committees had eradicated almost 80 per cent of the drug menace here.”
He said, “We are receiving a lot of threats from addicts and peddlers. Our committee members have suffered three murderous attacks in the past as well. The state government should make some security arrangements.”
Ranjit Singh, anti-drug committee member of Gurusar village, said, “Our efforts have yielded good results. We are still working towards making the villages completely drug-free.”
Meanwhile, the Special Task Force (STF) chief of the state police has also appreciated the efforts of the anti-drug committees. He has also given his go ahead to the specially designed black-coloured T-shirts for the committee members.
Notably, the anti-drug committees have even admitted some addicts to the rehabilitation centres in the district. With the increasing number of patients in the de-addiction ward at the Civil Hospital at Muktsar, the authorities have now sought an approval from the high-ups to double its capacity from 10 to 20 beds.
