Patiala, July 31
Former Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh today condemned the Cabinet decision to name the sports university to be established in Patiala after Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s grandfather and former Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh.
He said the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Sewa Singh Thikriwala should be removed from the city in case the Congress wanted to name the university as such. He alleged that Thirkriwala was tortured in the Patiala Central Jail, which the Maharaja had built.
Raveen Thukral, media adviser to the CM, said Bir Devinder was in the habit of seeking publicity by making such statements.
“He is obviously ignorant of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s contribution to sports, who had captained the first cricket team to England in 1911. He was responsible for the development of the sport in India,” he said.
