Gurdaspur, July 31
Despite the fact that Gurdaspur is the district headquarters, the state government has failed to post a tehsildar (revenue official) following which work pertaining to registration of sale deeds, marriage certificates, powers of attorney and attestation of important documents, including mutations and domicile certificates, has come to a complete standstill.
Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujwal said he had written several letters to the government to address the problem, but to no avail. The newly carved out neighbouring sub-divisional town of Dinanagar has two revenue officials, a tehsildar and his assistant, a naib-tehsildar. Cabinet minister Aruna Chaudhury is the sitting MLA of Dinanagar.
Sources claim that she has played to her constituency and subsequently got two officials. Revenue minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar expressed surprise at the development and added that he would look into the matter. “Lists of tehsildars to be posted in various cities have been prepared and an official will definitely be sent to Gurdaspur within a few days,” he added.
To complicate matters, when Dinanagar was given the status of a sub-divisional town last year, the authorities made a hash of the demarcation process. “Several villages and city wards which are an integral part of Gurdaspur, including Bariar, Ranjit Bagh, Abul Khair, ITI and Dharo Chak, have been shifted to Dinanagar. This means people of these areas, instead of getting their sale deeds registered in Gurdaspur, have to travel 10 km away to Dinanagar. Hearing of land partition cases of Gurdaspur too are held in Dinagagar. This anomaly should be sorted out at the earliest and the areas should be re-demarcated,” said Manjit Singh Dala, a Gurdaspur-based real estate owner.
