Punjab has become the first state where hepatitis C test is conducted free of cost in government hospitals. All 67,000 hepatitis C patients are gettingfree treatment and 93 per cent of them are recovering.

Besides, the state has decided to open Jan Aushadhi stores in all civil hospitals where generic drugs will be available on cheaper rates.

This was stated by Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu after inaugurating a Jan Aushadhi store at the civil hospital here on Tuesday.

He said in the last week of August, the state was going to launch health insurance scheme — “Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana” — for providing health services free of cost. Under this scheme people can get treatment up to Rs 5 lakh free of cost in all government and 364 private hospitals empanelled by the state.

He said in the first phase, 46 lakh families would be covered, whereas rest of the 16 lakh in the next phase. He said to meet the shortage of specialists in government hospitals, the department was planning to increase the retirement age from 58 to 65. — OC
