A pall of gloom descended on the Ranjit Nagar area here after the news of the death of Harmandeep Singh reached from Canada. Harmandeep Singh Bhinder was found dead on Sunday morning. His body was found floating in the Nith river in New Hamburg town of the Ontario province of Canada. He had reportedly gone missing.

Relatives and neighbours thronged the house immediately after the bad news to express condolences with the family. Harmandeep is survived by his father, mother and two sisters.

The 23-year-old, Harmandeep Singh, had gone to Canada on a study visa on November 2, 2017. The family members claimed that Harman had asked for Rs 10 lakh last week for the work permit and permanent residency (PR) in Canada. Sources said Harman was in tension for over past one week before he went missing.

The sources said Harman had allegedly committed suicide.

Shattered, Harman’s father Gurcharan Singh Bhinder said he had already sent Rs 1 lakh to him and had assured Harman to send Rs 2 lakh more in the coming days. Gurcharan said, “I had already sold off my 7-8 acre farmland to send him abroad and I was trying hard to give him more money. I am left with only a house now.”

The family members said they had received a call of his demise from their relatives, who were staying along with Harman,on the intervening night of July 26-27. The family members are now taking the help of an NGO, Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust, to bring his body back to India.

Meanwhile, Harman’s cousin Gurtej Singh, here in Patiala said, “We have received an email from the Canada Police about the body of Harmandeep. They (Canadian Police) have asked for identification of Harmandeep as our son.”

The family members have already appealed for help to the Punjab and Central government for bringing the body back to India.
