State launches drive against plastic bags 

Chandigarh: The Local Government Department has launched an intensive drive against the manufacturing, stocking, distribution, recycle, sale and use of plastic carry bags in the state. Local Government Minister Brahm Mohindra said considering it a great environmental concern as well as the main cause of choking of sewers and drains leading to unhygienic conditions all over, the Government of Punjab had launched a massive drive by raids, seizures and heavy penalties on manufacturers, stockists, distributors, recyclers, sellers and users of plastic. Govt invites forms for Kisan Nidhi scheme 

Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has decided to enrol land-holding farmers in the state under the expanded ambit of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme to cover all farmers’ families irrespective of the size of their land holdings. Earlier, only farming families holding land up to 5 acres were eligible to get benefits under the scheme.Agriculture Secretary KS Pannu said self-declaration forms had been called from those farmers who had not been able to fill them earlier and also from all those farmers who had now fallen in the ambit of the scheme. Newborn’s body found in sub-canal

Abohar: The body of a newborn baby was found in a sub-canal near Gidderanwali village on Wednesday. The village Chowkidar informed the police. The body was taken to the Civil Hospital here for autopsy. This is fifth baby abandoned in past one year in Abohar subdivision, activists of an NGO, Nar Sewa Narayan Sewa, said. Khuyiansarwer SHO Paramjit Kumar said a case under Section 318 of the IPC was registered on the report of village chowkidar. Investigation had been initiated. OC

Youth killed in road mishap

Abohar: Vijay Kumar (20) was killed and his friends Inderjeet and Sukhwinder were injured whem the bike they were riding met with an accident on the Abohar-Khuyiansarwer road. Vijay, who was studying in Class XII, had reached Khuyiansarwer village from UP to spend summer holidays with his father, a roadside vendor here. OC
