Faridkot, June 26

The counselling for the MBBS has begun, but there is still uncertainty over the number of seats reserved for the economically weaker sections (EWS) in the state. Reason: The Medical Council of India (MCI) on Wednesday again extended the deadline for receiving applications for the increase in MBBS seats to implement the EWS quota.

Now, medical institutions have time till Friday to apply. This is the fourth time the MCI has extended the deadline within a span of 21 days. Earlier, it had fixed June 7 as the last date for receiving applications from the state government and medical colleges for the increase in MBBS seats. Later, the deadline was extended to June 11 and then to June 24. As several medical colleges, particularly private ones, are still confused over the implementation of the EWS quota, the MCI extended deadline again. So far, only two government medical colleges — one in Amritsar and the other in Patiala — have been allotted 100 more MBBS seats for the implementation of the EWS quota this year.
