Gidderbaha, June 29
Tension prevailed in Gidderbaha town as nearly 30-40 people at Lachman Colony on Saturday morning got handwritten threatening letters, demanding Rs 50,000 each in the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s group.
The police have started investigating the matter .
In the CCTV footage, a youth with face covered is seen throwing letters in houses. His identity could not be established. Further, two phone numbers are given on the threatening letters, but the police found that one of these is of some other state and the other of a local resident who was out of town.
The letter, written in English, but has the message in Punjabi, reads, “Give money or face death. We sent message to everyone, but all took it as a joke and abused us. Now, you will know. In the interest of your and your family’s security, we should get Rs 50,000 from each house or get ready for the killings. No police complaint (Larwrence Bishnoi Group). Contact Numbers…)”
A visibly frightened tailor, Sukhmandar Singh Jagmag said, “Almost everyone in two streets got the letters. The situation is tense here and everyone is worried. We want quick and stern action against the sender.”
Pawan Bansal, another local resident, said, “Most of those who got letters are traders and everyone is worried. We hope the police will arrest the accused soon.”
Harpreet Singh, SHO, Gidderbaha, said, “Nearly 30-40 letters have been thrown in a particular locality. We are investigating it and a man in his early thirties is seen throwing the letters. He is being identified. Besides, two phone numbers are given on the letters. We will question those people whose cell numbers are mentioned.”
Manjit Singh Dhesi, SSP, Muktsar, said, “We are probing it. We have got some CCTV footages as well. As of now, we can’t say whether it’s a hoax or not, but we are taking it seriously. Usually the criminals don’t mention phone number on such letters.”
