The untiring ‘bhandara’ man
Abohar: Affected by polio, 77-year-old Bhim Sain Jat has been leading about 50 volunteers to run month-long “bhandara” during the annual Amarnath Yatra under the banner of Shri Amarnath Langar Sewa Samiti for the past 17 years. The NGO was founded by a flour mill owner, Kulwant Rai, in 1992 and was permitted by Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board to run free kitchen at Pissu Top, one of the difficult peaks on the Pahalgam-Chandanwari-Panchtarni route. Some volunteers had sustained injuries on August 1, 2000, when two militants armed with AK rifles appeared near the foot bridge at Lidder Nallah in Pahalgam and started firing indiscriminately on pilgrims and shopkeepers. The incident failed to dampen the spirits of the NGO activists, says Bhim. He moves on his tri-cycle to motivate people to make contributions for the “bhandara”.

The clean-up brigade
Fatehgarh Sahib: Mission Clean Bassi Pathana, an NGO comprising mostly youngsters from well-off families, is actively engaged in making living conditions in the sleepy town better. Inspired by PM Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat and state’s Haryali missions, the NGO has embarked upon ridding the town of garbage and environmental pollution. The NGO members, led by Amarjit Singh Kohli and Khusdeep Malhotra, initiated the cleaning of the local Dasehra ground and planted several saplings, repaired boundary walls, laid interlocking tiles and got it painted by spending nearly Rs 5 lakh raised from their own sources. They also started cleaning drains of the town regularly. Local MLA Gurpeet Singh GP also joins them in several initiatives. NGO members say they want more and more people to get involved in such works rather than waiting for the government to do the needful.
