The police on Wednesday busted a gang involved in supplying poppy husk from Maharashtra to various parts of Moga and its adjoining districts. The police arrested two drug smugglers and recovered 30 bags containing 800 kg of poppy husk from them.
Sources in the local police said the contraband had been recovered from a truck which was intercepted by policemen near a toll plaza at Chand Purana village on the outskirts of Moga city.
The occupants of the truck told the police that they were transporting cattle feed but during a thorough search, 30 bags of poppy husk were found in the vehicle.
Two drug smugglers, identified as Jasbir Singh Beera, a resident of Longiwind village (Moga), and Hardeep Singh, alias Deepa, a resident of Dashmesh Nagar, Ludhiana, were arrested from the spot.
Although police officials claimed that the kingpin of the drug racket, Gajjan Singh, managed to flee from the spot, insiders revealed he was also taken into custody for interrogation but his arrest was not confirmed by the police till the filing of this news report.
A criminal case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against them at Baghapurana police station. Further investigation is underway.
