CHANDIGARH: About three mobile phones are recovered daily on an average from Punjab jails. Ludhiana Central Jail, in news for a violent clash on Thursday, has recorded the highest number of recovery in the first half of this year. The Ludhiana jail incident was the first in which the inmates went live on social media through their mobile phones showing the clash and narrating their side of the story. However, jail officials say they have been alert and have recovered 491 mobile phones this year. Of those, the Ludhiana Central Jail accounts for the highest, 161 phones - which are 32 per cent of the total phones recovered. The Kapurthala jail is second with 81 mobile phones recovered from inmates while Central Jail, Amritsar and Bathinda come next with 37 and 31 mobile phones recovered, respectively. TNS
Accused’s remand in dera case extended
Patiala: The police on Saturday procured two more days of remand of the five accused arrested in the case of murder of a dera follower inside the Nabha jail. This was the third extension of their remand and comes a day after the police recovered two mobile phones that were used by the two main accused, who allegedly attacked and killed Mohinder Pal Bittu. Insiders say the police recovered mobile phones from the jail hidden by Gursewak Singh and Maninder Singh, who had allegedly killed Bittu. "Their phones are now being scrutinised," they said. Other than the main accused, Harpreet Singh Happy, Lakhbir Singh Lakha and Nihal Singh, accused of allegedly murdering sacrilege accused Balwinder Kaur of Ghawaddi village in 2016, were also produced in the court. Officials creating ‘tension’ in village
Sangrur: Leaders of the Zameen Prapti Sangharash Committee on Saturday alleged that senior officials were trying to create tension in Dhandiwal by rejecting their resolution passed in the Gram Sabha of giving reserve land from the village common land to Dalits. “Officials of the Panchayat Department are trying to create tension between upper caste people and Dalits,” said Mukesh Malaud, district president of the committee. 15 booked for illegal mining
Fazilka: Fifteen persons were booked for illegal sand mining in the Kathgarh village of Fazilka district on Saturday. Two sand-laden tractor trailers were also impounded. Sources said on getting information, a police patrol party impounded two tractor trailers near Kathgarh village in the Jalalabad subdivision of Fazilka. OC
Man arrested for raping 26-yr-old
Abohar: The police on Saturday arrested Balwant Kumar Mannu of Gidderanwali village in connection with a case registered under Sections 376 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code. A 26-year-old married woman had alleged that Mannu barged into her house when she was alone at night and raped her. The victim was medically examined at the Civil Hospital here. OC
