Ludhiana, June 29

Two days after the violence in Central Jail here, the Ludhiana police along with the jail police today carried out a surprise check inside the prison, which led to the recovery of nine mobile phones.

The recovery has put a question mark over the functioning of the jail authorities as phones are freely available inside the jail. Even during the violence on Thursday, inmates had gone live on Facebook and also made the videos in which gunshot sounds could easily be heard. The issue is likely to bring certain jail officials in the dock as the SIT probing the violence will question accused.

DCP Ashwani Kapur, who is heading the SIT, said, “We cannot rule out the connivance of some jail staffers. The SIT will bring 22 inmates booked for rioting and making videos for questioning, and if the SIT gets any evidence against any jail official for conniving with inmates in arranging mobile phones, action will be recommended against him.”
